The news often comes packaged with hilarity.
Large doses of it, by the looks of offerings today.

'Former Premier Mahathir Mohamad dramatically upped the stakes in his bitter battle with his successor yesterday when he quit the ruling party and urged other members to follow him.'
-The Straits Times, Tuesday May 20 2008

My impression has always been that the afore-mentioned already called it quits a few years ago. Certainly one can't quit twice over.

'Myanmar has agreeed to let Asean lead an international aid effort for its cyclone-hit areas but foreign relief workers will not be given "uncontrolled" access.'
-The Straits Times, Tuesday May 20 2008

While I feel profoundly for the victims of Nargis, I couldn't help but snort involuntarily at talks of uncontrollable circumstances. Look where supposed control led: 'the French and American relief ships waiting off the Myanmar coast' (Myanmar to accept global aid via Asean; The Straits Times, Tuesday May 20 2008). The Myanmar population must feel great comfort towards their junta.

'A telephone scam preying on people's generosity towards China quake victims seems to have made its way to Singapore.'
-The Straits Times, Tuesday May 20 2008

Innovation these days it seems, is not just confined within good and just causes.

'As for men who blame biology and Mother Nature for their infidelity, and, like monkeys, are unable to control their irresponsible urges, I suggest we lock them in a zoo as their animal instincts are stronger than their human sense of duty and responsibility.'
-Mr Syu Ying Kwok; The Straits Times Forum, Tuesday May 20 2008

I couldn't agree more with this opinion of errant men and their equally errant excuses.

The world we live in is a strange limbo of sorts.
Take this comment by a particularly loud gentleman, quoted while I was standing in queue at the Chinese Embassy earlier this morning, waiting patiently to do my small part for the victims of the devastating quake.

'Aiyah, Singaporeans are like that one. Very 'tik ki'.'
Excuse me Mister, I believe you're the exception.

'Tik ki' is the Hokkien phrase for 'Iron Tooth', i.e. stubborness
